As per a joint study by HEPI and Kortext, above 50% of students in UK countries have started using generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google Bard for their studies. This pioneering study, the first of its kind after introducing ChatGPT in November 2022, involved a detailed questionnaire administered online to 1,200 undergraduate students via UCAS. It illuminates the changing relationship between the readers and the emerging space of AI technology in higher education.

The Rise of Generative AI in Academia

A notable 53% of surveyed students have employed AI to assist in preparing assessments, with 36% using it as an ‘AI private tutor’ to elucidate concepts. However, the study also highlights a critical concern: the awareness gap regarding the reliability of AI-generated content. About 35% of students admitted to being unaware of the frequency at which AI tools might produce inaccurate information or ‘hallucinations.’ This calls into question the need for enhanced educational frameworks that can guide students in discerning and verifying the information provided by AI.

Bridging the Digital Divide

A pivotal aspect of the study is the emerging ‘digital divide’ in AI utilization among students. Findings indicate that male students, those from privileged backgrounds, and students of Asian ethnicity are more likely to use generative AI, potentially exacerbating educational inequalities.
